The title reaction shows a curvilinear dependence (downward curvature) of the overall third order rate constant (second order in piperidine) on amine concentration. This and other experimental results have been rationalized with a stepwise mechanism of the anomalous addition-elimination (AEa) type involving a change in rate-determining step within the kinetically significant addition process.
