The quadridentate selenoether, 1,3-bis(methylselenoethylseleno)propane, (bsep), has been synthesised from the newly prepared propane-1,3-diselenol, 2-chloroethyl methyl selenide, and sodium methoxide. The ligand forms only insoluble [Pd2(Se4)X4](X = Cl, Br, or I) complexes on reaction with sodium tetrahalogenopalladates(II) and with nickel(II) iodide forms the polymeric octahedral [Ni2(Se4)I4]. Ethylene chlorohydrin when reacted with elemental chalcogens or dimethyl dichalcogenides in the hydrazine hydrate-alkali system forms chalcogen-containing analogs of ethylene glycol and its derivatives (dichalcogenated beta-diglycols, chalcogenated ethanols, and chalcogenated methyl cellosolves).

A variety of organoselenium alkylatingagents were synthesized, using 2-hydroxyethyl and 3-hydroxypropyl selenocyanate intermediates, and studied to determine their chemical reactivities with 4-(4-nitrobenzyl)pyridine (NBP) and cytotoxicities against CCRF-CEM, L1210/0, and L1210/L-PAM cells. The comparison between the 2-chloroethyl sulfides and selenides 1-4 revealed the markedly enhanced nucleophilicity
