The development of the homologous Julia–Kocienskireaction has led to the discovery of two new reaction modes of epoxides with sulfones. These pathways allow rapid and direct access to a range of γ‐sultones and γ‐sultines.

NMR evidence is provided to show that low temperature sulphonation of simple olefins of all structural types involvesinitial formation of β-sultones, thus supporting the previouslysuggested concerted thermal π2S + π2S cycloaddition mechanism.
