The present invention relates to a novel process for the synthesis of cyclic perisuccinoylacenaphthene and related 1,4-diketo compounds, especially 3,4,8,9-tetrahrdrocyclohepta[fg]acenaphthylene-7,10-dione (Ia). It is the single step process in which acenaphthene is converted into 3,4,8,9- tetrahydrocyclohepta[fg]acenaphthylene-7, 10-dione using Lewis acid in better yield. This method eliminates the purification of intermediates involved in the synthesis and reduces the use of stringent requirements of metal catalyst and solvents. The invention further relates to their uses especially for synthesis of various pigments, dyes for high end applications, and also various intermediates for drugs or pharmaceutically active composition/ intermediates.
