    Optical Properties of Perfluorocyclobutane Aryl Ether Polymers for Polymer Photonic Devices

    New thermoplastic PFCB aryl ether monomers, 1,5-bis(trifluorovinyloxy)naphthalene (TFVON) and 1,4-bis(trifluorovinyloxy)benzene (TFVOB), were synthesized, and homopolymers, PTFVON and PTFVOB, and a copolymer, TFVON-co-TFVOB, were successfully prepared from them by 2pi + 2pi cyclopolymerization. The C-H vibrational absorption of the monomer was investigated by IR and nearIR spectrum analysis. The optical properties of the polymers in the form of plastic optical fibers and thin films were examined. The absorptions corresponding to fundamental and overtones of C-H vibrations in PFCB monomers were greatly reduced due to the presence of the fluorine substituents, which could lead to low attenuation loss of the resulting polymers in the near-IR region. Polymerization conditions such as temperature and time significantly affected the optical loss values of the polymers as well as their molecular weights and thermal properties. We prepared plastic optical fibers of the PFCB polymers, and optical windows were observed at 820, 910, 1025, 1260, and 1530 run. The attenuation loss of PTFVON was typically 0.083 dB/cm at 910 nm, the lowest optical window, 0.190 dB/cm at 1300 nm, and 0.227 dB/cm at 1550 nm. Copolymerization further reduced optical loss, and optical loss of the copolymer was about 0.03-0.1 dB/cm lower than that of the homopolymer. A birefringence of the spin-coated films of the PFCB polymers was also investigated and found to be exceptionally low. A birefringence of less than 0.001 was found in all the polymers. The lowest birefringence of 0.0005 was measured for PTFVON films.

    Synthesis and characterization of new naphthalene-based PFCB aryl ether polymeric isomers with 1,5-, 1,6-, 2,6-, and 2,7-linkages were described. Monomers of perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) poly(aryl ether)s, 1,5-, 1,6-, 2,6-, and 2,7-bis(trifluorovinyloxy)naphthalene, were synthesized from dihydroxynaphthalenes in two steps and polymerized by 2 pi + 2 pi step-growth cyclopolymerization. The naphthalene-based PFCB polymers (PFNs) had a relatively high T-g in the range 106-144 degrees C and excellent thermal stability at temperatures up to 400 degrees C. Among PFN polymeric isomers, T-g of the 1,5-linked PFCB polymer (1,5-PFN) was 30-40 degrees C higher than those of the other naphthalene isomers due to its high steric hindrance around the backbone. The refractive index and birefringence of the PFN polymers in the form of spin-coated films were determined. The PFN isomeric polymers showed tunability in refractive index and the bireftingence of the order of 1,5 < 1,6 < 2,6 < 2,7-PFN and 1,5 < 1,6 < 2,7 < 2,6-PFN, respectively. PFN isomers had low birefringences below 0.002 except 2,6-PFN. The lowest value in birefringence was 0.0008 of 1,5-PFN due to its highly kinked structure. Plastic optical fibers of homopolymers, 1,5- and 2,7-PFN, and copolymers, 2,7-co-1,5-PFN and 2,7-PFN-co-6F-PF, were prepared, and optical losses and windows of them were observed. The attenuation loss of PFN polymers was about 0.17-0.27 dB/cm at the wavelength of near-IR optical sources. 1,5-PFN had a lower optical loss than 2,7-PFN. The optical loss of the 2,7-co-1,5-PFN copolymer was effectively reduced compared with that of 2,7-PFN. The lowest optical loss polymer for PFCB POF was 2,7-PFN-co-6F-PF of 0.07 dB/cm at the wavelength of the optical loss window and 0.17 dB/crn at 1300 nm.

The ink composition includes a first protogenic group-containing ionomer having an equivalent weight less than 800, an optional second protogenic group-containing ionomer having an equivalent weight greater than 800, and a catalyst composition.     A membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell includes an anode catalyst layer, a cathode catalyst layer, and an ion conducting membrane. The ion conducting membrane is interposed between the anode catalyst layer and the cathode catalyst layer. The ion conducting membrane includes an ion conducting polymer having sulfonic acid groups and rubber particulates. Characteristically, the rubber particulates have an average spatial dimension less than about 600 nanometers. A fuel cell incorporating the membrane electrode assembly is also provided.
