  A thermoreversible thickener comprising a watersoluble copolymer containing as the constituent unit at least 50 wt.% of a vinylcarboxylic ester of an alkylene oxide adduct of a cyclic amine or a C₅ or higher acyclic amine. It has a thickening initiating temperature that can readily be adjusted according to the object of its use and also has a thickening effect which rises steeply as the temperature rises above the transition temperature. A composition comprising 0.01-30 wt.% of this thickener and 70-99.99 wt.% of an aqueous solution, emulsion or dispersion containing an organic or inorganic substance is utilizable for producing a coating composition, rolling oil composition, (pressure-sensitive) adhesive, printing ink, paper coating material, carpet backing adhesive, and so on.
