Several 8,8,10,10-tetrasubstituted 8,9,10,11-tetrahydro-7H-cycloocta[de]naphthalenes (3–9), novel pericyclic compounds of naphthalene, have been prepared through the alkylation reaction of 1,8-bis(bromomethyl)naphthalene and tetraethyl propane-1,1,3,3-tetracarboxylate, and the conformations of the cyclooctene ring in these compounds have been investigated on the basis of the PMR spectra.
