    The invention relates to a method for synthesis of aliphatic isocyanates from aromatic isocyanates in substantially 3 stages. In particular, the invention relates to a method for synthesis of bis{4-isocyanatocyclohexyl}methane (H 12 MDI) from bis{4-isocyanatophenyl}methane (MDI). More especially, the invention relates to a method for synthesis of H 12 MDI with a trans-trans isomer content of <30%, preferably of <20%, particularly preferably of 5 to 15%.

    Non-uniform water-insoluble interpenetrating polymer blend compositions comprising a first permeable water swellable polymer substrate interpenetrated in a gradient substantially normal to the substrate surface by a second less permeable condensation polymer to form a diffusion rate controlling membrane therein. Such compositions are useful as polymers with reduced permeabilities for water and organic solvents and therefore for the controlled delivery of active ingredients such as fragrances and bioaffecting agents into air or aqueous environments, or in membrane separation processes.

    The properties of polymeric compositions can be improved by the presence of a polysiloxane unit of formula where Q is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group, D is unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbylene R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 each, independently, is unsubstituted or substituted hydrocarbyl. x, y and z each independently has a value from 0 to 100. Polyimides containing these units display improved solubility and adhesion; they are useful, among other things, as protective coatings.

    Linear silicone-urethane copolymers which contain tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium groups on the polymer backbone of the general formula: [R′NR˝SiMe₂(OSiMe₂)bOSiMe₂R˝NR′CONHR˝NHCO₂(Y)O₂CNHR˝NHCO] wherein Me represents a methyl group; R′ represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group having one to three carbon atoms; R˝ represents a divalent hydrocarbon group having at least three carbon atoms such as (CH₂)₃₋₁₂; and Y represents (CzH2z+1N) where Z ≧ 5 and ≦ 22 and may be quaternized by use of a quaternizing agent R′X wherein X is selected from the group consisting of a halide atom, an acetate or higher carboxylate group, and an alkylsulfate group where the alkyl moiety has 1 to 12 carbon atoms and where R′, R˝ and b may vary within each copolymer are described. These copolymers may be cast from organic solvents or from aqueous dispersions, providing films which possess high degrees of clarity and unexpectedly high strength and elasticity.

    Disclosed are crosslinkable polymeric compositions which show a low content of vinyl monomers, are suitable for the fabrication of composite materials having good mechanical properties and comprise: (A)a liquid polyisocyanate; (B)a polyol having a maximum functionality of 7 and an average molecular weight of from about 200 to about 10,000; (C)a vinylester resin or unsaturated polyester resin; (D)a radical polymerization initiator stable at temperatures below 70°C; (E)a decomposition promoter for the initiator (D); (F)a trimerization catalyst for the isocyanate (A); (G)optionally, a mineral filler having dehydrating properties.
