  The photocyclization of the title compound afforded 14-hydroxy-4b-phenylbenz[c]indeno[2,1-a]fluoren-13-(4bH)-one, which is easily isomerized to 4b,13b-dihydro-4b-phenylbenz[c]indeno[2,1-a]fluorene-13,14-dione. The hydrogenation of both compounds gave anti-4b,8b,13a,13b-tetrahydro-4b-phenylbenz[c]indeno[2,1-a]fluorene-13,14-dione.

  A remarkable deuterium isotope effect on the photochromism of 3,3′-diaryl-3H,3′H-[2,2′]biindenylidene-1,1′-dione (2) in the solid state has been found. The yellow crystals of 2 and 2-d2 were immediately changed to reddish purple crystals upon photoirradiation in the solid state. The reddish purple crystals of 2-d2 returned back to the original yellow crystals under dark for 72 h, whereas that of 2 faded within 2 h.

  The yellow crystals of trans-syn-3,3′-diaryl-2,2′-biindenylidene-1,1′-diones (2) turned to reddish purple crystals when exposed to sunlight, which showed EPR signals of triplet biradicals in the solid state.
