wherein R and R ' are alkyl groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, cyano groups, halogen atoms; rings A1, A2, A3 and A4 are benzene, cycloalkane having 3 to 8 carbon atoms; at least one of Z1, Z2 and Z3 is an alkenylene group of the formula Q:
wherein P1 and P2 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, provided that at least one of P1 and P2 is alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, q and r are 0 to 2 and the sum of q + r is 2 or less; and the other of Z1, Z2 and Z3 are -CH2CH2-, m and n are 0 or 1. The liquid crystal compound of the invention has broader temperature range of a liquid crystal phase, excellent compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds, high stability and large elastic coefficient ratio K33/K11.
