The present invention relates to the field of mass modified isotopic labels. Specifically, it relates to a method for the manufacture of [γ18O3]ATP or [γ18O3]GTP comprising the steps of contacting succinyl CoA synthetase with ADP or GDP and a [P18O4]3- containing salt under conditions which allow for conversion of ADP into [γ18O3]ATP or GDP into [γ18O3]GTP and obtaining such [γ18O3]ATP or [γ18O3]GTP Moreover, the invention encompasses the use of [γ18O3]ATP or [γ18O3]GTP for labeling polypeptides and polynucleotides.
