    A fast curing, coating composition that is adapted for use as an automotive topcoat and which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating exhibiting excellent resistance to solvents and water. The coating composition which may contain greater than about 55 percent by weight of nonvolatile solids and, exclusive of pigments, solvents and other nonreactive components, consists essentially of: (A) a bifunctional copolymer bearing hydroxy functionality and pendent epoxy functionality, having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of between about 1500 to about 10.000 and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of between about -25° to about 70°; (B) a reactive catalyst comprising at least one phosphonic acid derivative; (C) an amino resin crosslinking agent; and (D) optionally, a hydrcxy functional additive. The phosphonic acid derivative catalyst is ncluded in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide between about 8 to about 1.4 equivalents of acid functionality in copolymer (A), and the amino resin crosslinking agent is Included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide at least about .4 equivalents of nitrogen crosslinking functionality for each equivalent of hydroxy functionality included in the composition.

    A thermosetting composition particularly suitable as a high solids coating composition for automotive applications. Exclusive of pigments, solvents and ether non-reactive components, the composition consists essentially of: (A) an oligomeric hydroxy functional phosphate ester having a number average molecular weight of between about 500 and about 5000 and being prepared by reaction of a polyepoxide and an acid phosphate ester; (B) up to 50 weight percent of a hydroxy functional compound; and (C) between about 1 and about 50 weight percent of an amine aldehyde crosslinking agent.

    A novel polyhydroxy oligomer crosslinkable with aminoplast resins to form a coating composition adapted for use as an automotive topcoat which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating with outstanding durability and excellent resistance to solvents and water. The coating composition comprises: (A) a polyhydroxy oligomer having a number average (Mn) molecular weight of between about 250-2000 and being the reaction produce of: (i) an ester having pendant hydroxyl and carboxyl functionality and being made by reacting (a) a C3-Clo aliphatic branched diol, and (b) an alkyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride, wherein (a) and (b) are combined in the reactant mixture in an amount sufficient to allow reaction in at least about a 1:1 molar ratio; and (ii) a C2-C10 monomer, having reactive functionality capable of esterifying said carboxyl functionalilty of said ester, said C2-C10 monomer being selected from the group consisting of: (a) a monomer wherein said reactive functionality reacts with said carboxyl functionality to form an hydroxy in addition to an ester linkage; (b) a monomer bearing hydroxyl functionality in addition to said reactive functionality and wherein said reactive functionality does not generate an hydroxy in addition to an ester linkage; and (c) a monomer bearing hydroxyl functionality in addition to said reactive functionality wherein said reactive functionality reacts with said carboxyl functionality to form a hydroxyl in addition to an ester linkage, wherein said ester and said C.-C1o monomer are combined in the reactant mixture in an amount sufficient to allow reaction in about a 1:1 molar ratio; (B) an amine-aldehyde or polyisocyanate crosslinking agent; and (C) 0-50 weight percent based on the total weight of (A), (B) and (C) of hydroxy functional additive having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of between about 150-6000, In addition, the coating composition of this invention may include conventional additives such as catalysts, antioxidants, U.V. absorbers, flow control or wetting agents, antistatic agents, pigments, plasticiers, solvents, etc. The oligomers of this composition are also compatible with non- agueous dispersions (NAD's).

    There is provided a resist underlayer film forming composition used in a lithography process for producing semiconductor devices. A method of producing a semiconductor device comprising: forming a coating film by applying a resist underlayer film forming composition containing a polymer, a crosslinker and a photoacid generator on a semiconductor substrate; forming an underlayer film by irradiating light to the coating film; and forming a photoresist by applying a photoresist composition on the underlayer film and heating the resultant layer. The polymer polymer is a polymer having a benzene ring or a hetero ring in a main chain or a side chain bonded to the main chain, and the content rate of a benzene ring in the polymer is 30 to 70% by mass. The polymer may be a polymer containing a lactone structure.
