    The present invention relates to materials used for aligning liquid crystals of liquid crystal display elements and to a polymer for use in liquid crystal vertical alignment layer used in producing a liquid crystal vertical alignment layer. The polymer for use in a liquid crystal vertical alignment layer includes (a) a moiety that is photochemically isomerizable but not photochemically crosslinked, (b) a moiety that is photochemically crosslinkable, and (c) a moiety that stabilizes a vertical alignment. The polymer can be used to produce a vertical alignment layer that has a liquid crystal alignment property enabling control of alignment at a low UV dose and that offers a large pretilt angle and superior optical stability.

    Photochromic azobenzene cellulose ethers were prepared by homogeneous etherification of cellulose with 2,3-epoxypropoxy-azobenzene (EA) in N,N-dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride solution. The EA with epoxy group could highly efficiently react with cellulose to synthesize 3-azobenzyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl-cellulose (Azo-cellulose) ethers with controllable degree of substitution (DSazo). The DSazo was in a range of 0.2-2.0 adjusted by the molar ratio of EA to anhydroglucose unit of cellulose. The Azo-celluloses with DSazo >= 0.53 were soluble in aprotic solvents like dimethylsulfoxide. Their chemical structures and properties were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR, and thermogravimetric analysis. They showed reversible trans-cis-trans transition when Azo-cellulose/DMAc solutions were irradiated by successive irradiation of UV and visible light. The transition between trans- and cis- isomers could be effectively controlled by simply adjusting the irradiation time. The photo-stimulated trans-cis-trans conformational change induced conformation transition between rod-like shape of trans-isomer and skewed shape of cis-isomer. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.     We here reported the multistimuli responsive behavior of polymer nanoparticles, which was formed through direct dispersion of the amphiphilic azobenzene-contained hyperbranched poly(ether amine) (hPEA AZO) in water A series of hPEA-AZO were synthesized by introduction of azobenzene moieties into the periphery of hyperbranched poly(ether amine) (hPEA), which was developed by our group recently The obtained polymer nanoparticles of hPEA AZO which were revealed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), exhibited the sharp stimuli-response to temperature, pH, and ionic strength with tunable cloud point (CP) from 25 to 100 degrees C CP of the obtained hPEA AZO nanoparticles in aqueous solution decreased with the increase of azobenzene content, pH value and ionic strength, and represented a linear relationship with the azobenzene content and ionic strength The hPEA-AZO nanoparticles also showed a light controlled CP and size After UV irradiation (365 nm), we observed lower value of CF and larger size for hPEA-AZO nanoparticles The CF difference of hPEA AZO nanoparucles in aqueous solution between before (CPT, trans form) and after (CPC, cis from) UV irradiation (365 nm) increased linearly upon the azobenzene content up to 5 degrees C
