An organ to be transplanted, such as a kidney, can effectively be preserved for an increased period of time by perfusion using a perfusate which is made of a Ringer's solution modified by increasing its potassium ion content to 8-20 meq/liter with a stably emulsified perfluorocarbon compound and dissolved albumin. A preferred concentration of the perfluorocarbon compound, for example perfluorodecalin, is 7.5 to 12.5%(W/V) and that of albumin is 1-8%(W/V) based on the perfusate.

An emulsion of perfluorocarbon compounds in an aqueous system has oxygen transporting properties. By incorporation of fat of animal or vegetable origin and at least one of the amino acids glycine, serine or phenylalanine, or urea in the emulsion, the stability of the emulsion will be increased to a point where it can be sterilized by autoclaving, and have nutritive properties as well. The invention also concerns the preparation of an emulsion stabilized in the above manner.

The present invention provides a manufacturing method of an artificial organ comprising a material having a solubility parameter δ of not more than 13 (cal/cm3)1/2, and a microporous membrane having a portion coated with a fat-soluble modifier. The manufacturing method is composed of the steps of: filling micropores of the body fluid treatment membrane with a filling solution, which has no or little solubility with a fat-soluble modifier solution; and coating a portion of the body fluid treatment membrane with the fat-soluble modifier by contacting the fat-soluble modifier solution. This may allow only necessary portion to be coated with the fat-soluble modifier so that a smaller amount of the fat-soluble modifier may be employed.
An oxygen-rich ophthalmic composition characterized in that it comprises oxygen and/or oxygen donor, wherein the amount of oxygen and/or oxygen contained in oxygen donor is 10 mg or above per liter of the ophthalmic composition, or the content of oxygen is at least 90% of the saturated dissolved oxygen, which composition is useful in prevention, alleviation, or treatment of ocular diseases, especially corneal diseases or disorders.
