Treatment of aromatic carbonyl compounds with Zn powder in 10% aq NaOH solution without using any organic solvents under the mild conditions afforded the corresponding 1,2-diols in good yields.

the meso-stereoisomer as the major product, an unexpected result considering that most organometallic methodologies preferentially yield the dd-isomer. Additionally, the method represents a novel application of the [Cr(en) 2 ] 2+ .
