Treatment of heteroaryl-aldehydes with diethyl cyanophosphonate in the presence of a catalytic amount of LiCN affords phosphorylated cyanohydrins which are reduced in situ with SmI2 to give heteroaryl-acetonitriles in generally good overall yields (50-100%).
