    A microcapsule enclosing a color-former solution for a pressure-sensitive recording paper is prepared by a process in which a water-soluble cationic urea resin and at least one of prepolymer selected from the group consisting of melamine-formaldehyde prepolymer, urea-formaldehyde prepolymer and melamine-urea-formaldehyde prepolymer are polycondensed on the surface of a dispersed solvent droplet containing a color-former in the presence of an anionic surfactant, while causing complex-coacervation between the water-soluble cationic urea resin and the anionic surfactant.

    Microspheric opacifying agents are provided by admixing an aqueous, partially condensed, aldehyde condensation product with an oily material containing an emulsifying agent thereby forming a water-in-oil emulsion, admixing an amphiphilic acid catalyst with the emulsion and polymerizing the condensation product to form discrete, substantially spherical, opaque, solid particles. Additionally, the solid particles may be separated from the oily continuous phase and admixed with water for the further removal of oily material, and thereby causing the formation of spherical agglomerates or "super particles" having a substantially greater opacity than the aforesaid discrete particles. The super particles are hollow, substantially spherical particles having substantially spherical, discontinuous walls composed of agglomerated substantially spherical particles.

    A process for manufacturing microcapsules by dissolving or dispersing microcapsule contents in an aqueous solution of acrylic acid-methacrylic acid copolymer and/or acrylic acid-itaconic acid copolymer, then polymerizing urea and/or melamine and formaldehyde in the solution or dispersion adjusted to pH 2.5.about.6.0, and forming film of urea-formaldehyde copolymer, melamine-formaldehyde copolymer, or urea-melamine-formaldehyde copolymer around capusle contents. Microcapsules manufactured by this process are useful for colors for carbonless paper or thermo-changeable colors.

    Opacifying agents, which may be coated onto or incorporated into paper sheets, consisting essentially of spherical aldehyde condensation polymeric super-particles, each having a spherical, discontinuous shell surrounding a spherical hollow core, said shell composed of agglomerated, discrete spherical aldehyde condensation polymeric secondary particles which are solid throughout. The opacifying agents are incorporated into paper sheets by admixing cellulosic fibers with the super-particles.
