    There is provided a liquid crystal display device that may limit a reduction in the voltage holding ratio (VHR) of a liquid crystal layer and an increase in the ion density (ID) in the liquid crystal layer and thereby address issues of faulty display such as white missing pixels, alignment inconsistencies, and burn-in. The liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, which may limit a reduction in the voltage holding ratio (VHR) of a liquid crystal layer and an increase in the ion density (ID) in the liquid crystal layer and thereby reduce the risk of faulty display such as burn-in, can be suitably used, in particular, as an IPS-mode or FFS-mode liquid crystal display device for active-matrix driving and may also be used as a liquid crystal display device for liquid crystal display televisions, monitors, mobile phones, smart phones, or the like.

    The nematic liquid crystal composition exhibits a negative dielectric anisotropy (Δ∈), the liquid crystal composition being useful as a liquid crystal display material, and a liquid crystal display element using the same. The liquid crystal composition of the present invention has a large absolute value of the dielectric anisotropy thereof and a low viscosity. By using this liquid crystal composition, it is possible to provide a liquid crystal display element which has a high contrast, high-speed responsiveness, and good display quality in which image sticking and display defects are not generated. The liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition is a useful display element which realizes both high-speed response and suppression of display defects. In particular, the liquid crystal display element is useful as a liquid crystal display element for active-matrix driving, and can be applied to, for example, a VA-type or PSVA-type liquid crystal display element.

    A liquid crystal composition of the present invention has a liquid phase over a wide temperature range, low viscosity, good solubility at a low temperature, high resistivity and voltage holding ratio, and stability to heat and light, and can thus provide, in high yield, a liquid crystal display device having good display quality and causing little display defects such as image sticking, dropping marks, and the like. A liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition of the present invention is useful, particularly useful for a liquid crystal display device for active matrix driving, because both fast response and suppression of display defects are achieved, and the liquid crystal display device can be applied to a liquid crystal display device for a VA mode, a PSVA mode, or a TN mode.

    The liquid crystal composition of the present invention is used for liquid crystal display devices of an IPS mode, a TN mode, and the like that have a high response speed and do not easily cause display defectiveness such as ghosting or dropping marks. The liquid crystal composition contains a component which is a dielectrically positive component containing a dielectrically positive compound and a dielectrically neural component which exhibits dielectric anisotropy greater than −2 and smaller than +2. The liquid crystal composition has excellent properties in which the composition forms a liquid crystal phase in a wide temperature range, has a low viscosity, dissolves excellently at a low temperature, has a high degree of specific resistance and voltage holding ratio, and is stable with respect to heat or light.
