and reduction with lithium aluminiumhydride gave mixtures of two diols in each case. Treatment of each mixture with toluene-p-sulphonyl chloride gave the four stereoisomers of ancistrofuran. A stereoselective synthesis was also developed to the trans-fused ancistrofuran which was identical with the natural isomer. A remarkably stereoselectivereduction of a γ-hydroxyketone with two equiv. of lithium triethylborohydride has been observed and this effect has been suggested to originate from ‘chelation control’; the reaction has been utilised in a short stereoselectivesynthesis of ancistrofuran.
