1-dimethyl-1-silaphenalene (2, R = X = CH3) and related molecules show that silaphenalenium ions do not delocalize the positive charge throughout the entire π system like the hydrocarbon phenalene. Evidence for short range delocalization by a vinyl group attached to silicon was found in comparing appearance potentials of the silaphenalenium ion 2a with acyclic and saturated analogs.
