The preparation of these compounds by five methods is described, in particular one inventive method which comprises reacting a correspondingly R-substituted salicylaldehyde and barbituric acid in an alcoholic solvent in the presence of a sulfonic acid. Representative compounds of the invention have been shown to exhibit anti-allergy reactions and are thus useful in treating, such diseases as asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria and ulcerative colitis.
