Lithiation of a carbon atom in the skeleton of SiCl and CCi containing carbosilanes under preservation of the SiCl groups was achieved by treating the compounds with n-BuLi at -100°C. Trapping with MeI or Me3SiI, respectively, clearly indicates the position of the lithiated atom. Thus Cl3SiCCl2SiCl3 yields Cl3CCl(Li)SiCl3 which was established by identification of Cl3SiCClMeSiCl3 or Cl3SiCCl(SiMe3)SiCl3
