A ligand design approach, which requires rational design of ligand based on the knowledge of specific target, was applied for the synthesis of two interesting and robust MOFs 1 and 2 containing unusual several types of copper(II) secondary building units (SBUs). Thanks to unsaturated metal centers (UMCs) and azo group, microporous material 1 exhibited not only high CO2 uptake but also an impressive selective adsorption of CO2 over CH4 and N-2. Moreover, a high H-2 uptake of 1 was also observed.

A new Cd-II-coordination polymer, namely, [Cd-3(nbtc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O](n) (1), has been hydrothermally synthesized with in situ generated 5-nitrobenzene-1,2,3-tricarboxylate (nbtc(3-)) ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that compound 1 is constructed from trinuclear Cd clusters and exhibits a previously unknown 2D (3,4,9)-connected (3.4(2))(3(2).4(3).5)(3(6).4(11).5(10).6(8).8) topology as well as 3D H-bonding pillared architecture.
