Twenty-one organosilyl- and organogermyl- substitutedferrocenes, most of which contain the M—M(M = Si or Ge) groupings, have been prepared and their 1H NMR spectra have been recorded. The preparations of some organic derivatives of silicon and germanium used in the synthesis are also described.

The binuclear ruthenium complex (Me2SiSiMe2)[(η5-C5H4)Ru(CO)]2(μ-CO)2 (3) was obtained in poor yield by reaction of Ru3(CO)12 with C5H5Me2SiSiMe2C5H5 in boiling heptane. A thermalrearrangement reaction of 3 in heptane afforded the complex [(Me2Si)(η5-C5H4)Ru(CO)2]2 (4), which was evidently formed via a metathesis between Si−Si and Ru−Ru bonds in 3. Molecular structures of 3 and 4 have been determined

The cyclopentadienyl substituted di- and trisilanes (Cp2SiMe)2, (CpSiMe2)2 and Cp2Si(SiMe3)2 (Cp = C5H5) were prepared and characterized by 29Si-NMR and vibrational (IR) spectroscopy as well as elemental analyses. All silanes exist as mixtures of isomers resulting from silatropic rearrangements.

Me2Si-eta5-C5H4(CO)Fe(CO)2Fe(CO)-eta5-C5H4SiMe2 (1) was synthesized by reaction of 1,2-bis(cyclopentadienyl)tetramethyldisilane and pentacarbonyliron. An unexpected product, Me2Si-eta5-C5H4 Fe(CO)2SiMe2-eta5-C5H4Fe(CO)2 (2), was obtained from the reaction, which was evidently formed via a novel metathesis reaction between Si-Si and Fe-Fe bonds in 1. The molecular structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.
