Chlorinative cleavage of germanium–germanium bonds in permethyloligogermanes initiated by photo-induced electron transfer

s, Me(Me2Ge)nMe (n=2–5), in CCl4–CH3CN in the presence of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA) afforded the corresponding chlorogermanes and hexachloroethane. Fluorescence of DCA was quenched by the oligogermane with a diffusion-controlled rate. A mechanism of free-radical chlorination involving oligogermane cation radicals and a DCA anion radical is proposed for the germanium–germanium cleavage.
