  A biomedical device, such as a contact lens, has a surface linked to a polymer comprising boronic acid moieties. The boronic acid monomeric units may be derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a boronic acid moiety, such as a vinylphenyl boronic acid or a (meth)acrylamido phenyl boronic acid.   A contact lens is coated with a first polymer, such as a boronic acid-containing copolymer, having affinity to mucin, and a second polymer. The second polymer improves initial comfort of the contact lens. During wear of the contact lens, the second polymer is removed from the contact lens, by blinking and/or tear fluids, and mucin complexes with the first polymer on the contact lens surface.
