IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Antimony trisulfide is a solid, grey or red-orange. It is used in pyrotechnics, as well as in the manufacture of ruby glass, matches, explosives, and as a pigment in paints. HUMAN STUDIES: Workmen in a plant where antimony trisulfide was used were studied, focusing on cardiovascular status. Prior to the study there had been six sudden deaths in a group of 125 workers exposed to antimony for 8 months to 2 years. The deaths were suspected to be due to heart disease. In the workers studied, 14 of 113 had blood pressures that were >140/90 mm Hg, and 37 of 75 showed significant changes in their EKGs, mostly the T-wave. Ulcers were detected in 7 of 111 exposed persons (63 per 1,000) as compared with 15 per 1,000 in the total plant population. Although use of antimony trisulfide was discontinued, EKG changes persisted in 12 of 665 workers. ANIMAL STUDIES: Degenerative changes in the liver and in the tubular epithelium of the kidney were observed in rabbits exposed to 27.8 mg/cu m antimony trisulfide for five days. Rats exposed to 3.1 mg/cu m antimony trisulfide by inhalation for six weeks developed electrocardiographic changes, notably with flattened T-waves. On autopsy, the heart was found to be dilated, with signs of degenerative changes; focal hemorrhage and congestion in the lungs were considered to be secondary to heart failure. Cardiotoxic changes were observed in two dogs exposed to 5.6 mg/cu m for ten weeks. Continuous oral administration of antimony for 8 and 12 weeks had toxic effect on the structure and function of the kidney in growing rat.
Evaluation: There is inadequate evidence for the carcinogenicity of antimony trisulfide in humans. There is limited evidence for the carcinogenicity of antimony trisulfide in experimental animals. Overall evaluations: Antimony trisulfide is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans (Group 3).

Exposure of female dogs by inhalation to about 5.5 mg/cu m antimony trisulfide dust from a smelter (particle size, < 2 um) for ten weeks resulted in urinary excretion of up to 16-18 mg/L antimony.
