Iodine is shown to be an efficient catalyst for the Friedel–Craftsalkylation of arenes with a wide variety of aldehydes in toluene under ‘open-flask’ and mild conditions. In the presence of 10 mol % of iodine, the reaction of arenes with aromaticaldehydes gives the corresponding triarylmethane derivatives (TRAMs), regioselectively, in good to excellent yields. On the other hand, a series of diarylalkane
Trifluoromethanesulfonicacid in acetonitrile was found to efficiently catalyze Friedel–Crafts alkylations of 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene with a variety of simple or functionalized aldehydes to provide di- or triarylmethanes in high yields. The operationally simple protocol allowed a short synthesis of the phenylpropanoid natural product (−)-tatarinoid C establishing its absolute configuration. Under the

The FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts arylation reactions of N-sulfonyl aldimines or sulfonamidesulfones with electron-rich arenes and heteroarenes, which lead to the formation of triarylmethanes and bis-heteroarylarylmethanes, are developed. The use of mild reaction conditions, low catalytic loading, high yield, and single step synthesis are the advantages of the present procedure.

his 75th birthday. Abstract Niobium pentachloride is an efficient and useful Lewis acid to conduct Friedel–Crafts hydroxyalkylation between arenes and (hetero)aromatic aldehydes, to generate triarylmethanes. This practical methodology offers several advantages, such as short reaction time, mild experimental conditions, and excellent yields. Niobium pentachloride is an efficient and useful Lewis acid
