principal product of this reduction is the cyclic guanidinium ion 3c (protonated N′-benzyl-(2′-amino-4′,5′-dihydro-4′,5′-dihydroxy-1-imidazoyl)acetamide), which forms in a linear fashion as the nitroimidazole is reduced and accounts for 75% of the product upon completion of the reduction.
