The effects of different pretreatments, including pulverizing, oxidizing, immersing in basic solution and pickling in acid solutions, on the catalytic activities of hydrogen storage intermetallics used for the hydrogenation of cyclohexene have been studied. Reaction experiments were carried out in a pulse microreactor with gas chromatography equipment on line.Experimental results show that all four pretreatment methods have beneficial effects on the catalytic hydrogenation activities of the hydrogen storage intermatallics, with a maximum increase in reaction rate up to 2 orders of magnitude. On studying the crystal structures, surface compositions and the specific surface areas of the catalysts, the present authors believe that on pretreatment the increase in activity may be ascribed to an increase in the specific surface area and the enrichment of active metals on the surfaces.
