A copper-catalyzed oxidative esterification of 2-carbonyl substituted phenols from the alcohol oxidation level is described. This protocol represents direct access to a range of 2-carbonylated aryl benzoate derivatives, which are important building blocks in the synthesis of natural and pharmacological compounds. Several 4-(β-aryloxyethyl), 4-(β-aryloxyethoxymethyl and 4-[β-(aryloxymethoxy)ethyl] ethers of 2,4-dihydroxy-benzophenone are reported; such are frequently dimorphic. An easy preparation of 4-hydroxy-2-methoxy-benzophenone is described.
