THE simple fluorocarbon radicals CF3. and CF3CF2. are obtained by the irradiation of the compounds iodotrifluoromethane and iodopentafluoroethane respectively. These radicals will initiate the polymerization of olefines, and iodotrifluoromethane with ethytene, for example, yields a polymer of general formula CF3.[CH2.CH2]n.I (where n = 1, 2, 3 and 4). With tetrafluoroethylene, longer chain iodofluorocarbons CF3.[CF2.CF2]n.I (n = 1â15) are obtained, and these in turn yield long-chain fluorocarbon radicals, CF3(CF2)nCF2. when heated or irradiated1.
