Visible Light-Induced Co- or Cu-Catalyzed Selenosulfonylation of Alkynes: Synthesis of β-(Seleno)vinyl Sulfones

A visible light-induced Co- or Cu-catalyzed selenosulfonylation of alkynes for the synthesis of β-(seleno)vinyl sulfones is demonstrated. This method utilizes a low-cost cobalt salt or metal copper as the catalysts. The reaction goes through a photoinduced freeradical addition of selenosulfonates to alkynes for the 1,2-selenosulfonylation of alkynes undermildconditions.
Reactions of selenium with imines (RR1CNR2) of aldehydes and ketones in the presence of carbon monoxide, water and triethylamine lead to reductive selenation, on aerobic work-up, to afford symmetrical diselenides (RR1CHSe)2 in good to excellent yields. The proposed mechanism suggests that both in situ generated carbonyl selenide (SeCO) and hydrogen selenide (H2Se) are involved in the reaction.

Diorganyl selenides are efficiently synthesized from tertiaryalkyl halides, selenols or selenolates and zinc dibromide as well as from diselenides in the presence of zinc.
A stepwise conversion of a disulfide (SS) to a diselenide (SeSe) bond through the corresponding iodide intermediate was implemented and was applied to the synthesis of selenocystamine and l-selenocystine derivatives from cystamine and l-cystine, respectively, in moderate yields.

Sodium hydride is able to reduce elemental selenium to sodium diselenide (Na2Se2), but not to sodium selenide (Na2Se). Dialkyl diselenides and even dialkyl selenides, including unsymmetrical dialkyl selenides, can be nevertheless synthesized using the proper Se/NaH ratio (1/1 or 1/2).
