The synthesis of novel chromoionophoric azobenzocrowns with a hydroxyl group in the para position to the azo moiety has been described. The interactions of the obtained colored macrocycles with selected alkali and alkaline earth metal cations were investigated in acetonitrile by UV-vis spectroscopy. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
