Trisulfides over disulfides: highly selective synthetic strategies, anti-proliferative activities and sustained H<sub>2</sub>S release profiles

Temperature- and solvent-induced selective synthesis of trisulfides and disulfides is demonstrated. A remarkable selectivity was achieved using Na2S as a sulfur-transfer agent under mild, greener, catalyst-free and additive-free conditions. This study reveals trisulfides as a better model than disulfides in general for a sustained release of H2S and potent anti-cancer activities.
The chalcogenpolycations S8(AsF6)2, S19(HS2O7)2, and Se4(HS2O7)2 are powerful oxidants entering into electron transfer reaction with hydrocarbons, aromatic compounds, and halides.

An electrochemical synthesis of organic polysulfides through sulfur insertion from elemental sulfur to disulfides or thiols is introduced. The highly economic, low-sensitive and low-priced reaction gives a mixture of polysulfides, whose distribution can be influenced by the addition of different amounts of carbon disulfide as co-solvent. RhH(PPh3)4 and cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene (dppv) catalyze the exchange of sulfur atoms betweensulfur and organic polysulfides. The exchange of dialkyl trisulfides with sulfur proceeds at a high efficiency within 5 min at room temperature yielding a mixture of organic polysulfides.
