1-Halomethyl-2-oxa-5-azoniaspiro[4.5]decane halides were synthesized by reaction of 1-(2-vinyloxy)ethylpiperidine with bromine and iodine. The product structure was confirmed by H-1 NMR and IR spectroscopy, and their steric configuration was optimized in terms of the density functional theory.
The present invention is directed to new and improved packaging systems for storing cationic ophthalmic devices such as cationic contact lenses and to methods for packaging such cationic ophthalmic devices with solutions to improve the comfort of the lenses during wear. In particular, the present invention is directed to a packaging system for storing a cationic ophthalmic device in a solution comprising an effective amount of an anionic polymer. Such solutions are retained on the surface of an unused lens for extended periods of time, resulting in surface modification that persists in the eye, which may provide significant improvement in the wetting properties of fresh lenses used for the first time and, moreover, even several hours after lens insertion, preventing dryness and improving lubricity.

A water swellable crosslinked polymer of essentially balanced charge is obtained by polymerizing a polymer-forming composition comprising a cationic-anionic pair of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and a non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated hydrophillic and/or hydrophobic monomer. Contact lenses formed from the polymer exhibit little if any tendency to attract soils, eg proteinaceous debris, to their surfaces.
Silicone hydrogels formed from a hydrated polymerization product of a monomer mixture comprising (a) a major amount of a non-silicone-containing hydrophilic monomer; and (b) a minor amount of a silicone-containing monomer, wherein the hydrogel has a water content of greater than 50 weight percent are disclosed.
This invention is directed to ophthalmic materials and ophthalmic lenses that are a co-polymerization product of a (a) hydrophilic monomer with (b) a tris(siloxy)silyl group-containing monomer, (c) a wide variety of hydrophobic monomers (both aliphatic and aromatic) and usually a (d) polyfluorinated monomer, as well as optional monomers or monomer mixtures that can include a cationic monomer, a non-aromatic hydrophobic monomer and a poly(dimethylsiloxy)silyl group-containing monomer. A contact lens prepared from such a co-polymer exhibits enhanced water content, while maintaining exceptional oxygen permeability, thereby providing a lens that can be worn comfortably for prolonged periods of time. A process for the preparation of such lenses is also disclosed.

Ophthalmic lenses, such as corneal contact lenses, include a lens body made of a composition including a lens body made of a composition including a first crosslinked polymer material which is water swellable, and a second polymeric material, other than the first material, selected from water soluble polymeric materials, water swellable polymeric materials and mixtures thereof. The second material is physically immobilized by the first material. Such lenses provide increased water retention and/or increased water content and/or increased modulus and/or reduced friction which increases lens wearer comfort. Compositions and methods for providing such lenses and compositions are also provided.
