The preparation and optical charge transfer spectrum of the hexachlororhenium(V) anion
摘要:
A convenient synthesis of the relatively poorly studied pentavalent complex anion [RCl6]1- as the tetra-butyl ammonium salt is reported. The complex has been characterised by electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements. The electrode potentials of [ReCl6]1- (Re(V/IV) and Re(IV/III) in CH2Cl2 correspond with those of the [ReCl6]2- ion. The solution electronic absorption spectrum is dominated by two intense Cl to Re(V) charge transfer manifolds which are readily assigned to Laporte-allowed transitions. These features are more accessible than in other d2 chlorides studied previously.

The anticancer properties of a series of mononuclear Re(IV) compounds of formula ReCl(4)L (where L is bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine; dmbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were investigated for the first time. All compounds displayed potent in vitro antiproliferative activity against selected cancer cells.

Kinetic parameters are reported for catalysis of the aquation of the hexachlororhenate(IV) anion by mercury(II), thallium(III), cadmium(II), and indium(III), and of the hexabromorhenate(IV) anion by thallium(III), in aqueous solution. Correlation of these kinetic results with stability constants for halogeno-complexes of the respective metal cations is discussed.

Vanadium pentachloride and molybdenum and rhenium hexachloride are all thermally unstable but can be prepared by metathesis from the corresponding fluorides with BCl3 at low temperatures. MoCl6 is structurally related to β‐WCl6, and ReCl6 to α‐WCl6. VCl5 is a dimer in the solid state (see structure; V red, Cl green).
