Open wide: Irradiation of N‐alkyl alkynyl maleimides yields imide‐cyclobutene containing macrocycles with Ci and C2 symmetry. In the case of the Ci isomers increasing the tether length leads to a one‐dimensional increase in cavity size akin to a “letterbox” effect (see scheme).
