    A process of using of a particularly substituted phenol as a chain terminator of a polymeric resin is disclosed. The chain terminator is a member selected from among ortho-substituted phenol, metha-substituted phenol, and their corresponding coupled esters. The polymeric resin is selected among polycarbonate, polyester carbonate and polyester. The thus chain terminated resin is suitable for producing molded parts and extrudates. Also disclosed are the process for producing these polymers and processes for producing the molded parts and extrudates.

    A method of producing a long roll retardation film comprising the sequential steps of: (a) casting a film forming material on an endless support to form a long roll film; (b) stretching the long roll film in a lateral direction of the long roll film while both edges of the long roll film are held employing a plurality of clips for each of the edges in a tenter (First Process); (c) reducing distances in the lateral direction between the clips holding the both edges of the long roll film while the edges of the long roll film are held continuously from First Process with the clips (Second Process); (d) enlarging the distances in the lateral direction between the clips holding the both edges of the long roll film while the edges of the long roll film are held continuously from Second Process with the clips (Third Process).

    A process for producing oxybenzoyl copolyesters having partly or wholly a repeating structure of regularly arranged monomer units is disclosed, comprising 3 to 300 repeating units of the formula, which comprises reacting a compound of the formula, with a compound of the formula, in the presence of an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent having a boiling point of 100°C to 260°C under atmospheric pressure to produce bis(carboxyphenyl)phthalate, adding a compound of the formula, and optionally of the formula, and carrying out polycondensation with the removal of the solvent and by-products so that the polycondensation system is made substantially free from the solvent, at least at the end of the polycondensation, to carry out substantial bulk polycondensation.

    A wholly aromatic copolyester composed mainly of isophthalic acid units and hydroquinone units, the total proportion of said isophthalic acid units and hydroquinone units being at least about 80 mole% based on the entire units, said wholly aromatic copolyester having a terminal carboxyl group concentration, measured by the method described in the specification, of not more than about 90 eq/106 g and a reduced viscosity, determined at 35°C in a mixed solvent of phenol and tetrachloroethane in a weight ratio of 4:6 in a concentration of 1.2 gfdl of at least about 0.6 and being substantially linear and melt-shapable and substantially free from a halogen atom bonded to the molecular chain, and a film prepared therefrom by melt shaping. The wholly aromatic copolyester can be prepared by a process which comprises polycondensing under heat in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst (a) a reaction mixture consisting of a major proportion of a diaryl ester of isophthalic acid and hydroquinone and a minor proportion of at least one other component selected from diaryl esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids other than isophthalic acid, aromatic dihydroxy compounds other than hydroquinone and aryl hydroxyenboates or (b) a reaction mixture consisting of a major proportion of isophthalic acid, hydroquinone and a diaryl carbonate and a minor proportion of at least one other component selected from aromatic dicarboxylic acids other than isophthalic acid, aromatic dihydroxy compounds other than hydroquinone, hydroxybenzoic acid and aryl hydroxybenzoates, and after the reduced viscosity of the polymer formed in the reaction system has reached about 0.2, performing the polycondensation at a temperature lower than the crystalline melting point of the polymer while maintaining the reaction system in a molten condition; or which comprises polymerizing the wholly aromatic copolyester having a reduced viscosity of at least 0.6 prepared by the above process or a wholly aromatic copolyester having a reduced viscosity of less than about 0.6 in the solid phase in a manner known per se under reduced pressure or while passing an inert gas into the reaction system. The film can be used as films for metal vapor depocition, films for printed circuits and electrical insulating films by using their excellent heat resistance.

    A process for producing by bulk polycondensation an aromatic polyester of the formula I, wherein X is a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, -0-, -SO2-, -S-, or -CO-, m is 0 or 1 and n is 0 or 1; when p=0,q=r=aninteger of 3 to 600; when q = r = 0, p = an integer of 3 to 600; when p≠ 0, q ≠ 0 and r ≠ 0, p + q + r = to 600; p, q, r are integers and q = r, which comprises using a horizontal jacketed reactor provided with one or two agitator shafts bearing impellers fixed thereto and carrying out the bulk polycondensation in said reactor while circulating a heat-transfer medium through the jacket, agitator shaft(s), and, if necessary, impellers to heat or cool the reaction system to obtain a particulate material having a weight-average particle size of 0.5 to 20 mm.
