All four diastereoisomers of 3-thymine-1-((t)butoxycarbonyl)aminocyclopentane-1-carboxylic acid have been synthesised from (S)-dimethyl malate and thymine monomer 12 has been incorporated into an alpha-cycloPNA oligomer.

Synthetic routes to all fourdiastereoisomers of 3-thymine-1-(tbutoxycarbonyl)aminocyclopentane-1-carboxylic acid have been developed starting from the commercially available (S)-dimethyl malate. The key step in the synthesis involves dialkylation of N-(diphenylmethylene)glycine ethyl ester with 1,4-diiodo-2(S)-trityloxybutane.

Starting from (S)-malic acid and (S)-glycidol, the first total synthesis of strictifolione, a new 6-(ω-phenylalkenyl)-5,6-dihydro-α-pyrone isolated from Cryptocarya strictifolia, was accomplished, which confirmed its structure including the absoluteconfiguration of the asymmetric centers.
