Mono-, di-, and tri-substituted tertiary phosphine and arsine derivatives of methinyltricobaltenneacarbonyls have been prepared. The co-ordination behaviour of the cluster is determined by the apical substituent Y, and the stereochemistry adopted is one which minimizes nonbonded carbonyl interactions.
