Diphosphirenium salt 1 reacts with LiAlH4 leading to P-hydrophosphaalkene 2, which on treatment with a catalytic amount of BF3·OEt2 affords 1H-diphosphirene 3, while with a stoichiometric amount of W(CO)5(thf), complex 4 is obtained.

The heterolytic cleavage of the P-N bond of the coordinated 1H-diphosphirene 5 gives the corresponding diphosphirenylium complex 6, while the homolytic cleavage of the P-N bond of the free 1H-diphosphirene 4 affords the transient diphosphirenyl radical 7 and the ensuing stable dimer 8 which features original half P-P bonds.
