The acceptorproperties of the alkylchlorophosphoranes PRnCl5–n(R = Me, n= 1 or 2; R = Et, n= 1—3), and of their derivatives with suitable Lewisacids (SbCl5 or PCl5), towards the Lewis bases Cl–, pyridine, 2,2′-bipyridine, and 1,10-phenanthroline have been investigated, using mainly 31P n.m.r. spectroscopy. Dimethyltrichlorophosphorane reacts with methylamine hydrochloride to give an oil which decomposes on heating, yielding the quaternary chloride N3P3Me6·MeCl as the principal product. The controlled pyrolysis of this salt gives N3P3Me6 in high yield. A simple method for the separation of N3P3Me6 and N4P4Me8 is described, based on the different solubilities of their salts in acetonitrile.
