Vacuum pyrolysis of a perfluorodialkyl-1,2,3-triazine (1) gives a route to a fluoro-alkyne derivative (2), which undergoes novel stereospecific 2π+ 2π cycloadditions to (E)- and (Z)-pentene.

Syntheses of trifluoro- and perfluoroisopropyl-1,2,3-triazine derivatives and the unusual nucleophilicattack by a perfluoroalkyl anion and phenylmagnesium bromide on ringnitrogen are described; cheletropic addition of 2,3-dimethylbutadiene to ringnitrogen and an analogous addition of 2,3-dimethylbut-2-ene occur.

3-triazine (1) with potassium fluoride at elevated temperatures gives trifluoro-l,2,3-triazine (4) and corresponding chlorofluoro derivatives. Introduction of perfluoroiso- propyl groups occurs, using fluoride ion and hexafluoropropene. A novel product (7) is described that arises from uucleophilic attack of perfluoroisopropyl anion on ring nitrogen in an intermediate triazine derivative.

Strong evidence is presented for generation of azetes by photolysis of fluorinated 1,2,3-triazine derivatives; a monocyclic azete has been trapped chemically and another has been observed at low temperature by i.r. and mass spectroscopy.
