    Kinetics of Silylene Insertion into N−H Bonds and the Mechanism and Kinetics of the Pyrolysis of Dimethylsilylamine

    Product and kinetic data on the copyrolysis of silane with ammonia and of silane with dimethylamine are reported. The main products of the SiH4/NH3 reaction are disilane and silylamine, and the main products of the SiH4/Me2NH reaction are Si2H6 and Me2NSiH3. The silylamine products are produced by SiH2 insertions into the N-H bonds of the amine reactants, and rate constants for this insertion lie in the k(2) similar to 2 x 10(9) M-1 s(-1) range, with no temperature dependence within the errors. Kinetic and product data on the pyrolysis of dimethysilylamine are also presented. Reactant loss followed reasonable first-order kinetics and produced rate constants consistent with Arrhenius parameters of log A(sec(-1)) = 12.64 +/- 0.98 and E = 48.02 +/- 3.1 kcal/mol. A mechanism of reaction, based on the kinds of silylene intermediate reactions expected, is presented. Comparisons of mechanistic expectations with the product data, however, indicate a more complex reaction system.

    Trisilylamine and N-methyldisilylamine do not react with carbon dioxide, carbon disulphide, or carbon oxysulphide at up to 100° and pressures up to 30 atmospheres. NN-Dimethylsilylamine combines with carbon dioxide to give silyl NN-dimethylcarbamate, and with carbon disulphide to give silyl NN-dimethyldithiocarbamate; with carbon oxysulphide, a compound is produced, formulated as O-silyl NN-dimethylmonothiocarbamate

    THE compound monochlorosilane, SiH3Cl, prepared in 1919 by Stock, was shown by him to yield volatile monomeric derivatives in its reactions with water and ammonia. With water it forms the compound (SiH3)2O, which is a gas, b.p.—15.2° ; and with ammonia the product is an amine-like body of the formula N(SiH3)3, b.p. + 52°. This field appeared to us to be one which was capable of great extension, and we have already made a number of interesting observations. Thus we find that monochlorosilane reacts spontaneously and quantitatively with methyl-amine according to the equation: The product, methyldisilylamine, is a liquid, b.p. + 32.3°, which is stable in air, but is quantitatively hydrolysed by alkali: its formula has been established by analysis and by vapour density determinations. It differs from aliphatic amines in being quantitatively decomposed by hydrogen chloride: Ethyldisilylamine, prepared by identical methods, is a liquid of very similar properties, boiling at + 65.9°.
