Simple and complex oxyhalides of ruthenium and osmium

Attempts to prepare simple and complex oxyfluorides of ruthenium have failed. Osmium is shown to form an octavalent oxyfluoride, OsO3F2, the parent of the trifluoroperperosmates, MIOsO3F3 (MI = K, Cs, Ag). The preparation of an oxychloride of hexavalent osmium, OsOCl4, is also described together with its reaction with hydrochloric acid under varying conditions.
