Abstract Four samples of magnesium sulphite in different hydration states were prepared and characterized by thermal (TG/DTG/DTA) analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. Evidence was derived for the existence of a previously unreported crystalline phase of approximate composition MgSO 3 · H 2 O. The other samples were the hexa-, tri-, and dihydrates.
