The addition of trimethylsilane to 1,5- and 1,3-cyclooctadiene in the presence of any platinum catalyst [chloroplatinic acid, trans-dichloro(ethylene)(pyridine)platinum(II), and 5%-platinum on carbon] always gave 3-(trimethylsilyl)cyclooctene almost exclusively.
