The activated acetates (4, a-c) react with 1,3,5-trialkyl hexahydro-1,3,5-triazines (5, a-c) to form, depending on the conditions, 1,5-disubstituted-3,7-dialkyl-3,7-diazabicyclo [3,3,1] nona-2,6-diones (1, b-i) or 5,5- disubstituted -1,3-dialkyl hexahydropyrimidines. In the case of the reaction of ethyl benzoylacetate (4d) with 1,3,5-trimethyl-hexahydro-l,3,5-triazine (5a) an alternative pathway produces
