    Copper(I) Coordination Chemistry of (Pyridylmethyl)amide Ligands

    Copper(I) chloro complexes were synthesized with a family of ligands, HLR [HLR = N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide, R = null; 2-phenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl) acetamide, R = Ph; 2,2-dimethyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl) propionamide, R = Me-3; 2,2,2-triphenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl) acetamide, R = Ph-3)]. Five complexes were synthesized from the respective ligand and cuprous chloride: [Cu(HL)Cl](n) (1), [Cu-2(HL)(4)Cl-2] (2), [Cu-2(HLPh)(2)(CH3CN)(2)Cl-2] (3), [Cu-2(HLPh3)(2)Cl-2] (4), and [Cu(HLMe3)(2)Cl] (5). X-ray crystal structures reveal that for all complexes the ligands coordinate to the Cu in a monodentate fashion, and inter- or intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions formed between the amide NH group and either amide C=O or chloro groups stabilize these complexes in the solid state and strongly influence the structures formed. Complexes 1-5 display a range of structural motifs, depending on the size of the ligand substituent groups, hydrogen bonding, and the stoichiometry of the starting materials, including a one-dimensional coordination polymer chain (1) and binuclear (2-4) or mononuclear (5) structures.

    Mononuclear copper(II) complexes of a family of pyridylmethylamide ligands HL, HLMe, HLPh, HLMe3 and HLPh3, [HL = N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide; HLMe = N-(2-pyridylmethyl)propionamide; HLPh = 2-phenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide; HLMe3 = 2, 2-dimethyl-N-(2-pyridyhnethyl)propionamide; HLPh3 = 2,2,2-triphenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide], were synthesized and characterized. The reaction of copper(II) salts with the pyridylmethylamide ligands yields complexes [Cu(HL)(2)(OTf)(2)] (1), [Cu(HLMe)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2), [Cu(HL)(2)Cl](2)[CuCl4] (3), [Cu(HLMe3)(2)(THF)](OTf)(2) (4), [Cu(HLMe3)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (5a and 5b), [Cu(HLPh3)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (6), [Cu(HL)(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (7), and [Cu(HLPh)(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (8). All complexes were fully characterized, and the X-ray structures vary from four-coordinate square-planar, to five-coordinate square-pyramidal or trigonal-bipyramidal. The neutral ligands coordinate via the pyridyl N atom and carbonyl 0 atom in a bidentate fashion.     Mononuclear zinc complexes of a family of pyridylmethylamide ligands abbreviated as HL, HLPh, HLMe3, HLPh3, and MeLsMe [HL = N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide; HLPh = 2-phenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide; HLMe3 = 2,'2-dimethyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)propionamide; HLPh3 = 2,2,2-triphenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide; MeLSMe = N-methyl-2-methylsulfanyl-N-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-acetamide] were synthesized and characterized spectroscopically and by single crystal X-ray structural analysis. The reaction of zinc(II) salts with the HL ligands yielded complexes [Zn(HL)(2)(OTf)(2)] (1), [Zn(HL)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) (2), [Zn(HLPh3)(2)(H2O)](CLO4)(2) (3), [Zn(HLPh)Cl-2] (4), [Zn(HLMe3) Cl-2] (5), and [Zn(MeLSMe)Cl-2] (6).     Copper complexes of a family of pyridylmethylamide ligands HLPh, HLMe3 and HLPh3 were synthesized and characterized [HLPh = 2-phenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide; HLMe3 = 2,2-dimethyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)propionamide; HLPh3 = 2,2,2-triphenyl-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)acetamide]. The reaction of copper(II) salts with the HL family and triethylamine in methanol yields copper(II) complexes [Cu4(LPh)4(OH)2](ClO4)2 (1), [Cu2(HLMe3)2(OMe)2(MeOH)2](OTf)2 (2) and [Cu2(HLPh3)2(OMe)2(MeOH)2](OTf)2 (3). The complexes have different nuclearity owing to varying steric properties of the ligands used. Complex 1 self-assembles in the presence of excess base to form a tetranuclear complex. Complexes 2 and 3 are binuclear and are bridged by a pair of methoxide ligands. Steric encumbrance of the ligands in 2 and 3 prevent cluster formation.
